What inspired you to become a teacher, and what do you enjoy most about teaching your subject?
My inspiration for becoming a teacher is my son. After many years of working in the film/television industry, I turned my focus to working with unique learners like my son. Navigating his educational journey, I found myself researching the best ways to educate a struggling reader. To support his dyslexia and ADHD, I poured myself into advocating the best possible path for him to grow as a student. This led me to become Orthon Gillingham trained to support other struggling readers. Through our journey, I found a passion for coming alongside other families with unique learners. Whether supporting unique learners or meeting the challenges of online learning, I find absolute joy in coming alongside learners and making learning fun as they develop a love of learning.
What I love most about teaching is the personal connections I get to create with all my learners. I also love brainstorming unique ways to engage all students to the ultimate goal of finding a love for learning in the process.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of the classroom?
When I’m not teaching, I love hanging out in the country with my husband, son, puppy, and our five crazy chickens. I also love being a homeschool mom and watching my son grow along the way. This will be our 10th year of homeschooling!
What was your favorite subject in school and why?
In High School, my favorite subject was Math because I looked at Math as a puzzle I needed to solve using critical thinking skills. As I grew as a college student, I quickly gravitated towards storytelling and the creative aspect of writing. Because I gravitate to both Math and ELA, I believe being able to instill creativity within all subjects is a goal I am constantly striving for.
Anything else we should know about you?
About 3 years ago, my family and I took a bold leap and left CA beach life for OK country life. Although we miss the beach, we love the calm country life of Oklahoma.
