Courses Overview

English Language Arts 11 encompasses literary works and informational texts from the Colonial Times to the 21st century. This course offers students a comprehensive understanding of America’s history while exposing them to diverse cultural perspectives by analyzing significant documents. Students will engage in rigorous rhetorical and literary analysis, demonstrating their comprehension through essays and multimedia presentations. Additionally, students will hone their research skills, critically evaluating sources for validity and relevance.

English 11 strongly emphasizes the writing process, guiding students through various stages such as brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing a polished final product. Students have access to a Project Plan, a valuable tool for organizing and preparing.

Families should note that specific literature may contain sensitive material, necessitating review and discussion with an adult. While the A-G Guide and suggested literature resources provide a list of grade-level appropriate readings, students are encouraged to explore additional texts that align with the themes covered in the curriculum and complement the assigned tasks.

Student Placement at Branches Learning

At Branches Learning, our goal is to meet each student where they are and help them grow from there. To support this, we consider teacher recommendations and, when helpful, brief placement tests in Math and Language Arts. These short assessments will be offered several times throughout July and August. Returning students may not need to test, but families of new students will be contacted directly if testing is recommended.

We keep placement testing low-stress and focused on supporting your child. When used, these tools help us:

  • Make sure students start in the right spot. A quick check-in on key skills helps us place students in courses that match their current level—so they feel confident, challenged, and engaged from the start.
  • Personalize learning. Results give teachers insight into each student’s strengths and needs, allowing us to better tailor instruction and support.

Our priority is helping students feel seen, supported, and successful from day one.
