English Language Arts, Grade 7

Courses Overview

Seventh-grade English Language Arts builds studentsโ€™ skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking. Using a range of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and multimedia texts, students analyze themes, arguments, grammar, and more while expanding their vocabulary and comprehension. They write narrative, argumentative, and informative essays with increasing clarity and structure, using evidence to support their ideas. Students also practice speaking and listening through discussions and presentations. The course emphasizes close reading, clear writing, and thoughtful communication aligned with Common Core standards.

Student Placement at Branches Learning

At Branches Learning, our goal is to meet each student where they are and help them grow from there. To assist us in doing this, we consider teacher recommendations and, when helpful, use brief online placement tests in Math and Language Arts. This process helps us thoughtfully group students within each grade level. Placement tests will be released on or before July 21 to students who did not attend Math or Language Arts with us during the 2024-2025 school year. Placement tests are not required prior to enrolling.

We keep placement testing low-stress and focused on supporting your child. When used, these tools help us:

  • Make sure students start in the right spot. A quick check-in on key skills helps us place students in courses that match their current levelโ€”so they feel confident, challenged, and engaged from the start.
  • Personalize learning. Results give teachers insight into each student’s strengths and needs, allowing us to better tailor instruction and support.

Our priority is helping students feel seen, supported, and successful from day one.
