Courses Overview

English Language Arts 9 is divided into four theme-based units, incorporating literary genres from various historical periods. Students analyze and discuss classical, contemporary, and informational literature. Emphasis is placed on writing argumentative, informative, and narrative essays involving graphic organizers, drafting, revision, conferencing, and creating polished final pieces. Opportunities for group interactions, peer collaboration, and independent study are integrated throughout the Course.

Families should note that specific literature may contain sensitive material, necessitating review and discussion with an adult. While the A-G Guide and suggested literature resources provide a grade-level reading list, students are encouraged to supplement these options with thematically relevant alternatives that meet course requirements.

Student Placement at Branches Learning

At Branches Learning, our goal is to meet each student where they are and help them grow from there. To support this, we consider teacher recommendations and, when helpful, brief placement tests in Math and Language Arts. These short assessments will be offered several times throughout July and August. Returning students may not need to test, but families of new students will be contacted directly if testing is recommended.

We keep placement testing low-stress and focused on supporting your child. When used, these tools help us:

  • Make sure students start in the right spot. A quick check-in on key skills helps us place students in courses that match their current level—so they feel confident, challenged, and engaged from the start.
  • Personalize learning. Results give teachers insight into each student’s strengths and needs, allowing us to better tailor instruction and support.

Our priority is helping students feel seen, supported, and successful from day one.
