Virtual teachers can tailor their instruction to meet individual students’ needs and learning styles. They are essential to creating engaging and collaborative environments. Ruth Maas has been teaching virtually for over ten years and brings a lot of wisdom to Branches Learning.

How long have you been teaching virtually?
I have taught live virtual math and computer science classes for over 10 years. Before that, I created and shared custom math videos, designed several schoolwide math websites, and shared a few of my mobile math games.
What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning, and why?
I like creating things with the students. For example, I have shown them how to assemble geometric shapes, measure ingredients for a recipe, and design Chinese paintings. I have also enjoyed watching the students present skits, playing the computer animations they made, and listening to their presentations.
How do you motivate struggling or disengaged students in your class, especially since math is challenging?
I like to give ample positive praise to my students. When I emphasize the positive things they do, the students tend to do more positive things to get my attention.
What keeps you passionate about your career?
What keeps me passionate about my teaching career is the opportunity to integrate my artistic talents with my job. I am also motivated by the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students.
What do you appreciate the most about teaching virtually for Branches Learning?
I love the staff and the positive environment that Branches Learning emulates!
What advice can you share for a teacher just starting to teach virtually?
Be yourself. Let the students know that you care about each one of them. Donโt be afraid to ask questions or seek better ways to do things.
